Dhaivat Jani PLUS is a bold contemporary jazz ensemble led by award-winning drummer, tabla player, and composer Dhaivat Jani. Drawing on Dhaivat's deep-rooted training in Indian classical music and his expertise in jazz, Dhaivat Jani PLUS embodies a unique global sound that defies traditional boundaries.
Inspired by Dhaivat's journey—growing up in India and forging his path as an immigrant musician in North America—their compositions delve into themes of life, identity, and the state of the world, weaving powerful narratives into their music.
The ensemble's debut album, Sum // Parts, released in 2023, garnered critical acclaim from notable publications such as All About Jazz, Paris Move, and Jazz.FM91. With a stellar lineup of versatile musicians, Dhaivat Jani PLUS captivates audiences with their compelling artistry and forward-thinking approach to jazz.
Since their formation in early 2020, Dhaivat Jani PLUS has performed at notable festivals such as the Markham Jazz Festival and the Toronto Undergraduate Jazz Festival, where they were recognized as "Artist of the Year." They have also appeared in a jazz series curated by Rich Brown at BSMT254 and have graced some of Toronto’s most esteemed venues, including The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar, Jazz Bistro, and DROM Taberna.
